Trombón y director de banda estadounidense. Desde 1934 Dorsey dirigió la Dorsey Brothers Orchestra con su hermano, el saxofonista y clarinetista Jimmy Dorsey (n. 1904–m. 1957). Posteriormente se separaron para dirigir sus propios grupos. La banda de Tommy Dorsey combinaba interpretaciones de baladas suaves con arreglos de jazz en tempo presto, presentando a algunos de los mejores músicos de la época, entre ellos, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra y el arreglista Sy Oliver. La forma de tocar el trombón de Dorsey era técnicamente impecable y tanto su fraseo ininterrumpido como su tono dulce tuvieron una influencia considerable tanto en cantantes como en instrumentistas de bronces. La banda de Tommy Dorsey fue una de las grandes orquestas de jazz más populares de la era del swing.
